Have you ever stopped and asked yourself, “Why am I doing all this?”
As an entrepreneur or leader, you're probably a master at setting goals and delivering results. But if you lack the deeper drive - your purpose - even the greatest success can seem empty.
What gives you energy? What really drives you? That's exactly what we want to explore in this article.
Why it is so important to know your purpose
Many people - especially leaders and entrepreneurs - live by the maxim "higher, faster, further". But at some point questions arise that cannot be answered with sales figures or expansion: "What gives my life meaning? What am I leaving behind?"
Without purpose, often missing:
Direction: You work hard, but the goal feels meaningless.
Fulfillment: Success alone does not make you happy if it does not match your inner drive.
Energy: Things that are not in line with your purpose cost more energy than they give.
With a clear purpose, everything changes. It becomes the source of your energy, your decisions and your focus.
What is purpose? And what is it not?
Purpose is not just a big goal or a dream. It is the reason you get up in the morning, regardless of external successes. It is about the contribution you want to make and the feeling that your life is in alignment with your deepest core.
Purpose is:
An expression of your values and passions.
A long-term drive that carries you through challenges.
Individual and independent of external expectations.
Purpose is not:
A short-term goal or project.
Something imposed on you by others.
A fixed idea that never develops further.
The Path to Your Purpose: A 3-Step Plan
Finding your purpose is not an “inspiration”, but a process. It’s about digging deeper, reflecting and being open to what really moves you.
1. Looking back: Understanding your story
Our past often gives us clues about our purpose. Moments that have shaped you can show you what is really important to you and what you are passionate about.
Questions for reflection:
Which experiences have had the most positive or negative impact on you?
In which moments did you feel alive and fulfilled?
What have other people always admired you for?
Exercise:
Look for patterns. Are there recurring themes or values that emerge?
2. Thinking ahead: Developing your vision
Purpose also means looking beyond today. It's about asking: "What kind of life do I want to lead? And what contribution do I want to make?"
Define your vision:
What do you want to create or change in your life?
How would you like others to remember you?
What would you do if money didn't matter?
Tip:
Let your heart guide you, not just your head. Your purpose doesn't have to feel "logical" - it has to feel right .
3. Act: Bring purpose into everyday life
A purpose without action remains just a nice idea. The key is to translate your life purpose into concrete steps - in your business, your family and your personal life.
How to put purpose into practice:
Start small: Begin with a daily action that corresponds to your purpose.
Set priorities: Check decisions to see whether they are consistent with your purpose.
Share your purpose: Talk to your team or family about what drives you – it creates connection and inspires others.
Why Purpose Often Remains Hidden – and How You Can Find It
Finding your purpose is not always easy. There are many things in our world that distract us from it: external expectations, professional pressure, social media. But here's the good news: your purpose has always been there. It's just waiting for you to discover it.
Many of those I have worked with only found their purpose when they consciously took time for it – time for reflection, honest questions and the courage to accept uncomfortable answers.
