Do you sometimes feel like something is missing in your life? You achieve goals, maybe lead a team, appear successful on the outside - and yet there is this quiet voice that asks: "Is this really my path?"
How can you perhaps be less triggered by others who may upset you, disturb you in their behavior or bring you down?
What is important to you about yourself and your behavior towards others?
The answer to this question starts with your core values . And maybe that's the step you've been missing.
Why core values are the key to real success
We leaders are masters at developing strategies, making decisions and finding solutions. But we often do this from an external perspective: "What does the market want? What does my team expect? What makes sense?" What is missing is the question: "Does this fit with what is really important to me ?"
Your core values are the invisible core that guides your decisions – whether you are aware of it or not.
If you know and live it:
You make clearer decisions.
You lead more authentically.
You experience more satisfaction, independent of external successes.
The price we pay when we don't know our values
I have experienced it myself – and seen it with many entrepreneurs: If we do not live according to our values, it leads to tensions.
Maybe you notice this:
Inner restlessness: You work hard, but it doesn’t feel “right.”
False compromises: You say “yes” to projects, customers or partnerships that don’t really suit you.
Exhaustion: You lose energy because you are constantly torn between external expectations and internal resistance.
Ignoring your core values is like having a GPS without a destination: you're constantly moving, but you're not getting anywhere.
How to Find Your Core Values: The 3-Step Process
Discovering core values is not rocket science, but it does take time and reflection. Here is the process that has worked for me – and many other entrepreneurs:
1. Looking back: Where were you truly fulfilled?
Think about the moments in your life when you felt truly alive. What was important to you then? Freedom? Creativity? Community? These moments are windows into your values.
Example questions:
What has made you proud in the past?
Which decisions have brought you real joy?
What would you do even if no one was watching?
2. Question: What (really) drives you?
We often live according to values imposed on us by others - family, society or even the business world. Ask yourself honestly: Which values are really yours ? And which ones have you just adopted?
Exercise:
Write a list of values that come to mind (e.g. honesty, growth, responsibility). Then sort them until you find your top 5. For each value, ask yourself: "Does this make me feel free - or under pressure?"
3. Action: Do you live your values in everyday life?
Knowing your values is only the first step. The second is to make them visible in your everyday life. This means that you actively incorporate your values into decisions - in your company and in your private life.
Tips:
Review decisions: Does this project or partnership fit my values?
Involve your team: Share your values with your team and encourage them to do the same.
Time management: Schedule time for things that align with your values.
Why it is difficult to live values – and how you can do it
Even if you know your values, it is often a challenge to live them consistently.
The world “out there” has different expectations. It can be uncomfortable to say “no” or break old patterns. But that’s where the magic lies: When you live your values, your life becomes simpler, not more complicated.
An example from my life: At some point I realized that "freedom" is one of my core values. Despite this, I often made decisions that took me further and further away from this freedom. Only when I began to consciously live according to this value did my everyday life change - and my satisfaction.
